Introduction to Yangyang-gun
Yangyang-gun is a county-level administrative region in Gangwon-do, South Korea. It is the most typical matsutake producing area in South Korea, where the grand “Matsutake Festival” is held every October.
Yangyang-gun has an ancient name of Dongye and was a city in Koguryo during the Three Kingdoms Period. It is said that Yangyang (Xiangyang) was originally the name of a place along the bank of Han River in Hubei Province, China, which had similar natural and geographical environment to today’s Yangyang-gun in South Korea. With the mindset of comprehending the nature of human and natural justice, literati and officialdom told in literatures that the place enjoyed more beautiful sceneries and customs than any other, so it was named Yangyang. It is told that names such as Hyeonsan, Han River (Namdaecheon), Wushan Mountain, Lumen (Linquan) and Taiping Tower follow those adopted in Xiangyang, China.
