Main exchanges with Xiangyang
In October 2009, an economic and trade delegation led by the then Party Secretary Tang Liangzhi of Xiangyang City visited Columbus, Indiana, USA and the two cities reached a consensus on the development of sister city ties and decided to energetically develop friendly cooperation between the two.
In October 2010, the then Mayor Armstrong and Speaker Dvori of Columbus led a delegation to visit Xiangyang, had deep talks over further entering into cooperation in economy and trade, investment, tourism, production of auto parts, new energy vehicles as well as urban construction and management, and signed a letter of intent for the establishment of sister city ties between Xiangyang City and Columbus.
On November 16, 2010, Council of Columbus wrote to the Government of Xiangyang and agreed to establish sister city ties with Xiangyang City.
On September 22, 2011, in the activity of Wuhan US Week, the then Deputy Party Secretary and Mayor Bie Bixiong of Xiangyang formally signed a sister city agreement with Columbus on behalf of Xiangyang City.
In early 2012, on behalf of people in Xiangyang, the then Deputy Party Secretary and Mayor Bie Bixiong of Xiangyang delivered a televised speech and extended blessings of the Chinese New Year to overseas Chinese in Columbus.
In order to further promote bilateral ties, the then Mayor Ms. Brown of Columbus led relevant officials and the management of Cummins visited Xiangyang on October 22 through 23, 2012. During their visit in Xiangyang, the both sides discussed how to strengthen development and cooperation in the field of automobile industry via the sister-city platform and the management of Cummins introduced its plan of increased investment and new projects to Xiangyang and expected that Xiangyang Municipal Government could provide policy support for new projects of Cummins.
On June 19, 2016, Mayor James of Columbus delegated Guan Ruihan, Chinese student ambassador studying in the US to visit Xiangyang, further deepening the understanding of Xiangyang City, promoting the friendship between people from the two cities and boosting bilateral exchange and cooperation.
At present, cooperation between the two cities focuses on DCEC and relevant ancillary parts. DCEC Xiangyang Base is one of the earliest and largest production bases of DCEC, the joint venture enterprise of Cummins and Dongfeng Automobile, in China. Cummins, as a Global 500 enterprise, serves as the strongest bond and bridge between the two cities through its huge economic influence.
