Main exchanges with Xiangyang

On May 18, 2010, the then Deputy Mayor Shi Zhenqiang of Xiangyang City and the then Mayor Charles Meeker of Raleigh, North Carolina signed an agreement on establishing sister city ties in the meeting room in the City Hall of Raleigh.

In 2012, an economic and trade delegation from Xiangyang led by Deputy Mayor Ding Yalin visited Raleigh and North Carolina State University and the world-leading data statistical analysis and application enterprise SAS Headquarters in the city.

In 2013, Mr. Weeks, the then Councilman and Acting Mayor of Raleigh, paid a return visit to Xiangyang and concluded a preliminary intent of cooperation between medical organizations in both Xiangyang and Raleigh with Africa.

In early 2014, the program of cooperation among China, USA and Africa involving Xiangyang City and Raleigh proceeded smoothly; it was high acclaimed by Sister Cities International and won the Best Innovation Award granted by 2014 US-China Sister Cities Conference.

On July 10 through 13, 2016, a seven-member delegation led by Chairman James of Raleigh-Xiangyang Sister Cities Association visited Xiangyang, and units such as Jingzhou Street Primary School, the Primary Section of Xiangyang No.39 Middle School, Xiangyang Library and Xiangyang Youth Orchestra, had talks over promotion of educational exchanges, cultural performances and reciprocal visits and book exchange between the two cities, and preliminarily concluded relevant agreements.

Introduction to Raleigh

As the capital of the state of North Carolina, Raleigh is located in the middle part of North Carolina and is the second largest city in the state (second only to Charlotte). With a population of about 430,000 and covering an area of about 370 square kilometers, the city is home to a number of world-renowned high-tech enterprises and high-level research institutes. Founded in 1792, Raleigh is known as the “City of Oaks” for its many oak trees and is also called the city with the highest quality of life in the USA.

Main industries in Raleigh involve electric power, medical care, electronic communication equipment, garments, food processing, paper making and pharmaceuticals. It is famous for Research Triangle Park, which is the largest and the most successful scientific research base in America, making Raleigh a scientific research center for high and new technology and biotechnology in the USA. Raleigh possesses developed textile industry and it is also a main ship retail outlet and wholesale center of food and groceries in the east of North Carolina.

Lenovo R&D Center in Raleigh is one of Lenovo’s important research centers and market centers. It has witnessed the birth of the world’s first PC and a wide range of R&D and exploration activities carried out by a batch of senior experts with rich experience in software and hardware technologies in fields of technology such as advanced software architecture and advanced system architecture.

Raleigh has Raleigh-Durham International Airport and 10 private airports, three interstate expressways, five national expressways and three state-level expressways, where inter-city trains head for Charlotte, New York and Miami every day.

Additionally, there are two public universities, five private universities, three private profit higher education institutions, high-tech companies and famous recreational areas in Raleigh. The city boasts abundant cultural resources to the extent that there are 14 museums and many professional art institutions in addition to famous art centers, opera houses and theatres. Besides, Raleigh is also equipped with various well-established vocational and amateur stadiums and facilities. There are many media organizations in the city, including newspaper groups, TV stations and broadcasting stations. Raleigh is the 28th largest broadcast and TV market in America.
